‘Banshee’ with her new name of ‘Ariel.’ Northern Whig, 18 June 1913
‘Banshee’ sailing to Larne
‘Banshee’ was built for the RNIYC in 1902 with the sail No.9. She was renamed to ‘Ariel’ from 1910 to 1918 before changing back to ‘Banshee,’ a name she has retained to the present. The name ‘Banshee’ is from the modern Gaelic; Bean sí, a mystical women or spirit that heralds the death of family and friends with a deafening scream. A very charming title as I’m sure you’ll agree! She converted to Bermudian rig with the rest of the class of RNIYC boats in 1925.
