Coomara (No.14) far left
‘Coomara’ was the 13th Fairy built overall. She was allocated the sail No.14 for obvious reasons, given the superstition regarding the number 13. The name ‘Coomara’ comes from the fairy tale ‘The Soul Cages’ by Thomas Keightley. The character of ‘Coomara’ is a ‘Merrow’ or ‘Merman’. The boat converted over to Bermudian Rig in 1925 with the rest of the RNIYC Fairies. Coomara suffered major damage in a sinking in 1984. The boat was raised but required an extensive rebuild which the RNIYC’s Frank Harper has been undertaking. It is hoped that the project will be completed in the next few years.
