Doreen (No.6) LEYC, ex EYC

‘Doreen’ was the 5th of the EYC’s Fairies to be delivered, being allocated the sail No.6 and a rather distinctive yellow paint scheme. ‘Doreen’, like the rest of her sisters was left in a state of limbo following the Second World War and the relative lack of any formal sailing, until the reformation of the Lough Erne Yacht Club in the 1940s. Doreen had a number of well known and distinguished owners such as; George Massy-Beresford, a prominent Anglo-Irish landowner and the respected and much beloved Gerry Dickie, the Enniskillen based businessmen who passed away in late 2020. ‘Doreen’ spent her last few years of sailing under the Louden-Browns who relaunched her in 2009 with as many quick fixes to keep her sailing until the Crom classic regatta. This was done primarily to help boost the number of Fairies that would be avaliable at the event. This fix was however a temporary measure as Doreen by this point was in a poor condition, with significant structural damage and rot having set into much of the wood. Very little was keeping her afloat besides a car battery powered bilge pump, heavy duty filler and a few prayers. This would not be the end for the affectionately nicknamed ‘Big D’ as she is currently being dismantled in preparation for her rebuilding alongside her sister ‘Paxie.’ This project aims to be completed in 2022, in time fo the 120th Fairy anniversary. More on this project can be viewed here as it will be updated as the rebuild progresses.
