Snipe, ex Wendy (No.11) LEYC, ex EYC

‘Snipe’ was the 10th Fairy of the Enniskillen Yacht Club, arriving with the 2nd batch of boats in 1907. Bearing a jet black hull and rather sinister name, she was a highly competitive and successful boat that features heavily in the records, consistently answering the gun, (showing up for racing). The name ‘Snipe’ comes from those of a number of Wading birds with long beaks that are used to quickly pull or ‘Snipe’ prey from the water. Snipe was owned by the D’Archy-Irvine side of the Irvine family from her arrival until the 1940s. ‘Snipe’ was renamed to ‘Wendy’ in 1919, back to ‘Snipe’ in 1927, ‘Wendy’ again in 1954, before being taken back to ‘Snipe’ some time later. ‘Snipe’ like her sister ‘Doreen’ was sailed to the very limit without major repair or restoration for decades and has been laid up since 2010. There are some stirrings for a future rebuild, but this is still being discussed.
