Zephyr, ex Knut, ex Tuftie (No.2) LEYC, ex EYC

‘Zephyr’ was the 2nd Fairy of the EYC, originally titled as ‘Tuftie’ until 1913 when she was changed to ‘Knut.’ This change would not be the last as she was later renamed ‘Zephyr,’ in 1919, a name she has retained to the present day. Like the rest of the EYC boats she was transferred over to the reformed LEYC beginning in the late 1940s. Originally sailing from Ely Lodge and later Killadeas, she along with her sisters have been based at the later ever since. The yacht was laid up for many years under restoration and rebuild, before being brought back to full order in 2010 by her owner John Suitor. Her original name of ‘Tuftie’ appears to come from that of the ‘Tufted’ duck, a species of diving duck. This trend of naming the EYC boats after a range of creatures or elements seems to differentiate them from their RNIYC counterparts who took more mystical and literary based names. Her second name of ‘Knut’ is that of the legendary 11th century ‘Cnut’ or ‘Canute’ who ruled the Kingdoms of England, Norway and Denmark. Her final and current name of ‘Zephyr’ comes from ‘Zephyrus’ the Greek God of west wind. Photographs of her restoration can be viewed here.
